Folic acid (vitamin B9) helps prevent neural tube defects when taken prior to becoming pregnant and during early pregnancy. It is used for production of DNA and red blood cells. It supports brain, nervous system function and mental health. Folic acid is also needed for protein metabolism and may support cardiovascular health.
